Ebensburg Sunday School Group Helps Healing Patch & Local
Groups
The Sunday School children at South Ebensburg United Church of Christ
presented a challenge to their parishioners during the 2009 Advent
season. Each Sunday during Advent, members were asked to help local
organizations by bringing in items that many people often take for
granted. The goal of the challenge was to focus on giving at Christmas
instead of receiving and emphasizing that there are little, inexpensive
ways to help others.
They kicked off the challenge by collecting used books to be donated to
Bright Beginnings Preschool for a book sale to benefit children in their
programs. On the second Sunday, pillowcases were selected for Home
Nursing Agency's Healing Patch: A Center for Grieving Children and Their
Families. According to the agency's bereavement services manager,
Allison Stockley, pillowcases are typically used in an activity during
discussions about nightmares, bad dreams, and fears at night. Following
the death of someone close, Stockley said children often experience
difficulty sleeping and pillowcases are used during an activity geared
to help alleviate a child's fear and anxiety.
For the third Sunday, socks were collected and delivered to homeless men
and women in Pittsburgh. From the last Sunday collection, the Ebensburg
Food Pantry received boxes of facial tissues. The act of kindness and
generosity proved to be a very worthy project as many individuals were
provided with added comfort during the Christmas season and in the
months to come.
