8/18/2020 The Healing Patch Children’s Grief Program continues to offer support for local grieving children and their family members at no cost to families. Although family group sessions are suspended at this time due to COVID-19, a variety of options are available for families.

New families are welcome to join and will have a one-on-one orientation with Healing Patch staff. This fall, the Healing Patch is launching virtual family packets and virtual group options. As a peer support program, the Healing Patch provides an opportunity for children and adolescents of similar ages, as well as their adult caregivers, to share in a safe environment. Although this is done ideally in person through volunteer facilitation of activities and discussion, the goal is to replicate this experience as much as possible virtually.

“Although they don’t replace in-person groups, virtual groups are an alternative way to stay connected, give members a place to complete grief activities, and share their activities with peers,” shares Healing Patch Coordinator Melody Ray. “Families also have the option of completing the provided activities as a family unit.”

Families will receive necessary supplies and instructions for activities by mail and can engage in the way that best fits their needs. Additionally, the staff will meet with families individually to provide resources and coordinate materials for memory bears, which provide a tangible connection for children to their loved one who has died.

“We are committed to supporting the grieving children in our region,” Melody says. “In this season, the loss of a loved one is compounded by the loss of normalcy and all of the changes that COVID-19 has brought. These grieving families need connection and hope now more than ever.”

About the Healing Patch

The Healing Patch Children’s Grief Program began in 2006 as a free peer support program for children and their families who have suffered the loss of a loved one, such as a parent, sibling, grandparent, or close family member. Since that time, the program has expanded to support children through in-school services, grief resources and other community services. Sharing memories and experiences allows grieving children and families to discover that what they are going through is normal and that hope and healing are possible. The Healing Patch is a free service to the community and relies on individual and community donations, grants, and fundraising events for support.
