How Do You CARE (Collaborate, Assess, Relieve and Evaluate)?  NHPCO is interested in learning how you CARE and invites you to be part of its esteemed faculty for its 13th Clinical Team Conference and Pediatric Intensive, to be held at Walt Disney World’s Dolphin Hotel in Lake Buena Vista, Florida from November 5 – 7, 2012. Whether clinicians are providing care to patients and families through interdisciplinary practice, managing interdisciplinary team staff, leading quality efforts or responsible for related practices and processes, they need the same critical information at your disposal; information that helps them CARE: Collaborate, Assess, Relieve and Evaluate. Submit a proposal that demonstrates your successes in one of more of these areas; you may be selected to join NHPCO for our field’s only interdisciplinary-focused conference!

Submission Deadlines: Concurrent sessions (60 minutes) and Workshops (90 minutes) – February 14, 2012; Poster Sessions – March 1, 2012. Visit the Call for Proposals online.

COMPLIANCE AND REGULATORY

Holding 2012 Date-of-Service Claims for Services Under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule… The negative update under current law for the 2012 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule was scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2012. Consequently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will instruct Medicare Administrative Contractors to hold claims containing 2012 services paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for the first 10 business days of January.  CMS will notify MAC’s and providers on or before January 11, 2012, with more information about the status of Congressional action to avert the negative update and next steps regarding the claims hold.

News from CGS; Provider Enrollment Revalidation… There has been an increase in provider enrollment revalidation inquiries to the Home Health and Hospice Provider Contact Center (PCC).  Please be advised that you should read through your provider enrollment revalidation letter thoroughly as well as consult the provider enrollment self service tools on both the CGS website and the CMS website before contacting the CGS PCC. These resources on CGS’ website provide information about the provider enrollment revalidation process, detailed information about how to complete the 855A form, and answers to frequently asked questions.

OIG Physician Self-Referral Law: Video and Audio Podcast… This video and audio podcast includes a general introduction to the Physician Self-Referral Law, an important fraud and abuse law administered by CMS and enforced, in part, by OIG.  You can access all of the Provider Compliance Training videos and audio podcasts on OIG;s website.

CMS Home Health, Hospice, and DME Open Door Forum… The next CMS Home Health, Hospice, and Durable Medical Equipment Open Door Forum is scheduled for January 11, 2012, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EST. Registration for audio only streaming web forum will opens January 5, 2012.  For information about registration visit the CMS website.

NOTES FROM NHPCO

Schumacher Letter in Washington PostNHPCO President & CEO Don Schumacher had a letter to the editor published in the Washington Post on December 23.  The letter, in response to an article originating from Bloomberg News, clarifies important points about hospice that were not well represented in the original article and should be factors in any well-informed discussion of hospice. Members should rest assured that NHPCO staff follow all relevant news regarding hospice and palliative care and respond accordingly. Members following some of the Bloomberg News coverage may want to look at NHPCO’s statement and accompanying talking points.

Last Chance to Take Advantage of Huge Savings!  Books, manuals, promotional items and so much more are on sale until January 9.  Visit Marketplace today and start saving.  Marketplace has something for every program, every team member and every budget.  Quantities are limited, so be sure to visit the website now.  Ready, set, SHOP!

CMS Voluntary Data Collection… Updated information regarding the CMS’ voluntary hospice data collection and submission project is now available on the CMS website. NHPCO joins CMS in encouraging all hospices to submit information regarding their QAPI indicators during this voluntary reporting period, which ends January 31, 2012. Hospices will be able to use a web-based data entry as described on the CMS website.

AARP Policy Institute Report on Dual Eligibles... In an effort to improve care and hopefully reduce costs, states and the federal government are seeking new ways to provide services to dual eligibles—people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Often missing from the discourse are the voices of dual eligibles themselves. A new report from AARP, "What Care Works Best For Dual Eligibles?" discusses finding from focus groups.
