Visiting Nurse Association of America Recognizes John Sheedy, M.D. as Volunteer Board Member of the Year

Visiting Nurse Association of America (VNAA) selected John Sheedy, M.D., Home Nursing Agency Medical Director as the 2004 Volunteer Board Member of the Year. Dr. Sheedy was formally recognized at the Visiting Nurse Associations of America's 23rd Annual Meeting during the National Awards Banquet on April 22 in New Orleans, LA.

For thirty-five years, Dr. Sheedy has given his gifts of time, talent and experience while serving on many Agency Boards and as Home Nursing Agency's Medical Director - all while maintaining a demanding physician practice, sharing a vibrant and fulfilling role as a husband and father of seven children.

Home Nursing Agency is one of 415 Visiting Nurse Associations nationwide. VNAs employ nearly 150,000 health care professionals, and share a non-profit mission to provide cost-effective and compassionate home health care to some of the nation's most vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Today, guided by their charitable missions, VNAs care for nearly four million people annually.

“I am indeed grateful for my recognition as the 2004 Volunteer Board Member of the Year by VNA of America, but I'm more appreciative of the experienced and dedicated people who served the Home Nursing Agency for the past 35 years. Our growth to become a provider of diverse services in Central Pennsylvania reflects the leadership of our community and the professionalism of our staff,” said Dr. Sheedy. In the late 1960's Dr. Sheedy recognized a need for quality health care, helped to develop a vision and understood the value of delivering home care and community services. He led the way, assembled the means and spearheaded the road to excellence, all in the name of Home Nursing Agency.

His initiatives, rationale, and devotion to do what was good and to do what was right always prevailed, which continues to be a great source of strength and inspiration to the staff and patients of the Agency. His actions and deeds have been instrumental to bringing the mission of Home Nursing Agency…to life.

The VNAA is the official national association for non-profit, community-based Visiting Nurse Agencies, who care for and treat approximately four million patients each year.

For more than 100 years, Visiting Nurse Associations (VNAs) have been providing home health care to the communities they serve. VNAs made a critical difference in the late 1800s by providing home-based care for the homebound, the impoverished, elderly and at-risk children.

In this new century, not-for-profit VNAs like Home Nursing Agency continue their unparalleled selfless tradition by offering quality of life and independence to all Americans through comprehensive home health care. The VNAA has a wide range of resources available on its award-winning website about home health care and things to ask about when considering home health care.

VNAs provide home health care for patients of all ages - from infants to elderly. They are the educators of disease prevention and health promotion. Physicians are confident when referring to VNAs because of the their quality standards and clinical excellence. Patients are extremely satisfied with the care they receive from VNAs as shown by a 99 percent customer satisfaction rating.

With their long history of providing quality care, VNAs are recognized as an important community resource and are governed by voluntary boards of directors. This community-based board ensures that the VNA addresses the specific health care needs of their locale. For more information on VNAs, check out www.vnaa.org
