Pennsylvania WIC Program Celebrates 30th Anniversary Local WIC Provider Recognizes Long-Standing, Dedicated Employees

The Special Supplement Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. WIC is a food and nutrition program benefiting infants, children under five and pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women with low to moderate incomes.

Locally, Home Nursing Agency has been administering the WIC Program throughout Blair County for the past 25 years and serves 3,867 of the county's participants. Earlier this year, Home Nursing Agency was selected by Pennsylvania Department of Health to provide services for Centre County's 2,118 participants as well.

“Home Nursing Agency has an established record of providing WIC services in Blair County and we look forward to serving Centre County. We encourage all residents with questions to please contact us,” said WIC Program Director Diana Wallace. “We've been so fortunate to have committed and long-standing employees as well, Wallace added.”

Wallace said the following Home Nursing Agency WIC employees were recognized for their years of service and dedication to the program - Susan Lamertina, Nutritionist, and Paula O'Rorke, Nutrition Aide, have been working for the Agency's WIC Program for 20 years. Zelda Riddle, Nutrition Aide, has been with the WIC program for 19 years.

In just three decades, WIC has grown from a pilot project operating in a few counties to a national program serving over 7.6 million women, infants and children each month. Throughout Pennsylvania, WIC serves an average of 237,000 clients each month in over 365 locations throughout all 67 counties. Pennsylvania ranks eighth in total WIC participation among the 88 state agencies that provide WIC services.

WIC's primary mission is to give the most vulnerable children the best possible start by providing nutrition education and healthy foods during the critical stages of fetal and childhood development and to achieve optimal nutritional status for children before they start school.
